Practice Swaps are short peeks into artists' current creative research. These 25-minute long workshops, scores, rehearsals, or demonstrations provide an opportunity for exchanging skills and building creative community.

Practice Swaps run from 9am to 1pm on Sunday January 14th at Casco Bay Movers and are free and open to the public.

Tuning Scores

With Kristen Stake

“Tuning Scores” is an approach to movement improvisation developed by Lisa Nelson that uses the felt sense of the body to create unique choreographic compositions. In our practice time, I will lead the group through a “tuning” process in which we will move slowly, deepen into our senses, and practice improvising with eyes open and closed. If there is time, we will watch each other and reflect on our experiences.

Mututal Support

As a dance artist/teacher and somatic healer, I’ve come to learn that doom and gloom set in when we feel particularly unsupported. How do we recognize the support that exists in our individual, in our relationships, and in the collective? This embodied research sees support where it really is and moves towards group constellation. (Improvised, somatic, embodied). Physical contact with other humans will be suggested, but alternative approaches will be given.

Sudden Shifts: Movement Training for the Resistance

Compositional Improvisation invites us to experience ourselves as powerful agents of change, able to create spontaneous yet cohesive actions and forms. In this session, we lead with curiosity and tenderness, beginning with solo investigations that deepen into whole-group awareness and composing. We cultivate a practice of paying attention, honing the skills needed to co-inhabit the literal and figurative spaces we make together, so that all voices are recognized, and powerful sudden actions can arise. From this place of deep attention we act, we move, we make together.

Salsa: Circles of collaboration

Salsa, as a music and dance rhythm, has a history that intertwines resistance, migration, diaspora, and celebration. During this practice time, we will engage with some basics of linear and cuban salsa. We will explore the power of collaboration and collective movement in circles.; how do we communicate and coordinate our individual movements to create a group moment?

Join Liz for a Gaga/Mary Overlie-like warmup, move into some theatrical improvisations and attempt to marry the two.

The Sock Network: Tangle Jam!

With: Holly Taylor

An exploration of the ways we enter into and sustain relationships with each other. We'll play with mega-socks - long, cloth tube-garments that can be worn by two people, several feet apart, at once - to see what becomes possible and what becomes visible about how we can and do move together. An invitation to silliness and to get a little caught up in things with each other.
